Colorfastness to Light Testing Macines

AATCC 16 Option 3, E or 16.3, Colorfastness to Light: Xenon-Arc


  • Sample is placed in a testing mask with part of the sample exposed and part covered as a control
  • The testing mask is loaded in a weather-o-meter holder and placed in a rack in the weather-o-meter for exposure
  • Sample is exposed to a customer requested amount of AATCC fading units (hours)
  • Color change of the sample is evaluated

AATCC 169 - Weather Resistance of Textiles: Xenon Lamp ExposureZenon Lamp


Scope: Provides a procedure for the exposure of textile materials of all kinds, including coated fabrics and products made thereof, in an artificial weathering apparatus using controlled conditions of test. This test method includes procedures for both controlled wetting and no wetting of the specimen.

  • Provides 4 options for machine setup.
  • Samples can be exposed and then tested for different properties including:
      • Colorfastness
      • Different types of strength testing

ASTM D2565, Xenon-Arc Exposure of Plastics OutdoorsQSun


Scope: This covers procedures and test conditions that are applicable for xenon-arc exposure of plastics conducted in accordance with Practices G151 and G155. This practice also covers the preparation of test specimens, the test conditions best suited for plastics, and the evaluation of test results.

ASTM G155, Operating Xenon Arc Light Apparatus for Exposure of Nonmetallic Materials


Scope: The basic principles and operating procedures for using xenon arc light and water apparatus intended to reproduce the weathering effects that occur when materials are exposed to sunlight (either direct or through window glass) and moisture as rain or dew in actual use. This practice is limited to the procedures for obtaining, measuring, and controlling conditions of exposure. A number of exposure procedures are listed in an appendix; however, this practice does not specify the exposure conditions best suited for the material to be tested.

Scope: Provides a procedure for the exposure of textile materials of all kinds, including coated fabrics and products made thereof, in a laboratory artificial weathering exposure apparatus employing fluorescent UV lamps as a light source and using condensing humidity and/or water spray for wetting.

  • Uses UV-A type fluorescent UV lamps

ASTM G7, Atmospheric Environmental Exposure Testing of Nonmetallic Materials

Scope: This practice covers procedures to be followed for direct exposure of nonmetallic materials to the environment. When originators of a weathering test have the actual exposure conducted by a separate agency, the specific conditions for the exposure of test and control specimens must be clearly defined and mutually agreed upon between all parties.
